Musts and Shoulds…

Yes, I’ve neglected my blog. Teaching has once again completely taken over every hour of my life… but I’m back now!

Lately, I’ve slipped into a couple of nasty old habits than tend to accompany the loss of my ‘work/life balance.’
1. Back to having one coffee a day, and admittedly, I’ve gone over this some days.
2. Overeating, eating junk, eating quickly.
3. Missing the odd marathon training session at the gym.
4. Avoiding cooking, cleaning, shopping and pretty much anything that doesn’t relate to school.
5. Speaking to my boyfriend for about 20 minutes a day, including weekends.
6. Having life goals but not really looking at them or thinking about them.

This pattern seems to repeat itself again and again. Whenever we have periods of stress at school, which to be honest now seems to be a permanent thing, everything is secondary to the job. And well…this just isn’t right!

Tony Robbins talks about having a list of ‘musts and should.’ Your ‘shoulds’ are obviously things that you ought to do, but you can occasionally make your excuses and skip them. Your ‘musts’, however, are things that are absolutely crucial. They should be treated in the same way as brushing your teeth and getting dressed in a morning.

The problem here is that I did have my musts, but I forgot that they were musts and I allowed them to be shoulds. Things like going to the gym – which I know is absolutely crucial for me to cope with the stress of the job and maintain a happy outlook on life – has become a should, when I know it has to be a must! And cooking dinner for myself…come on! Is my job really that important that I don’t have time to feed myself properly? That has to be a must!

So…at some point today, I’m going to sit down and write out a list of musts and shoulds. And I’m going to stick to them! And then at some point, I must blog them on here!
I’d be very interested to know what other people’s musts and shoulds are. Please, let me know!
